Celler Vall Llach has a sincere commitment to the environment, their rural territory and its neighbors. They feel climate change is one of the biggest societal challenges that they will face in the coming decades and as such, they work continually to improve the design and execution of their winemaking activities to respect and protect the natural environment. The environmental standards they uphold are foundational to who they are and what they do.
Vall Llach

Celler Vall Llach is located in the DOQ Priorat, just two hours south of Barcelona and only one hour inland from the Mediterranean Sea. Highly regarded for producing some of the most revered wines in Spain, Vall Llach is committed to protecting the local environment, traditional viticulture, and the Catalan language and culture for generations to come.

Vall Llach was founded in the heart of Spain’s historic Priorat wine region by two lifelong friends, renowned Catalan singer Lluís Llach and esteemed notary Enric Costa. Their shared passion for reviving Priorat’s ancestral land led them to create a winery that respects traditional methods while embracing innovation.
The legacy of Vall Llach continues with Albert Costa, Enric Costa’s son, who has infused the winery with a fresh perspective while maintaining the estate’s core values. Albert’s dedication to blending time-honored traditions with cutting-edge winemaking techniques ensures Vall Llach’s wines reflect the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.

Lluís Llach, a renowned Spanish musician, writer, and politician, gained fame in the 1960s and 1970s for his politically-motivated music, which became anthems in his native Catalonia. After retiring from music in the 1980s, he returned to the stage in the 1990s, releasing around 20 albums throughout his career. Lluís’ deep connection to Porrera stems from his mother’s roots in the village, where he spent summers as a child and moved to permanently in 1995. Inspired to revive the local economy after a devastating flood in 1994, he co-founded Vall Llach winery in 1996 with childhood friend Enric Costa, converting his family’s 100 year-old vineyards into world-class wines that quickly garnered some of the top scores in Spain and throughout Europe.

Albert Costa, Co-Proprietor and Winemaker of Celler Vall Llach, is an agricultural engineer with a degree in oenology. After gaining winemaking experience in Australia, New Zealand, and in Napa Valley, California, he returned to Porrera to work for his family and deepen his understanding of Priorat’s unique terroir. Following his father Enric Costa’s passing in 2013, Albert assumed leadership of the winery alongside Lluís Llach. Today, Albert is the majority owner of Vall Llach and continues to serve as the estate’s Head Winemaker.
Albert’s wife, Isbel Serra, holds a degree in Industrial Design and Business Management, specializing in Property Management, in addition to the title of Professional Chef, awarded by the prestigious Hofmann Culinary School of Barcelona. Isabel developed a new luxury enotourism program at Celler Vall Llach in 2019 and in 2023 became the winery’s General Manager.
Region

Region
Priorat is known for its Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Vineyards are traditionally planted at high coastal altitudes, ranging from 300 to 3,000 feet above sea level, which helps moderate temperatures, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors while retaining acidity.
Vall Llach’s vineyards are planted at some of the highest points in Priorat, on steep slopes of slate-rich soils, known locally as llicorella. This singular terroir consists of slate rock that has a reddish hue and is mixed with quartz and mica. The incredibly rocky soil provides poor fertility, forcing vine roots to dig deep in search of nutrients and water.

Winery

Winery
Founded in the 1990s, Enric Costa and Lluís Llach were adamant their winery be located in the middle of the village of Porrera. Given this location, they believed it would contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of local inhabitants and would deliver the wealth brought by wine tourism directly to the people of Porrera.
In early 2021 a severe snowstorm caused the winery’s ancient roof to collapse. The entire vinification hall was rebuilt and the winery now contains an even more diverse selection of winemaking and aging tools including new stainless steel tanks, different sized French oak barrels, concrete tanks, stone and clay eggs. A large refrigeration chamber has been added which cools grapes as they enter the cellar just after being harvested, leading to fresher, more aromatic wines. In addition, one lateral side of the cellar wall contains a uniquely designed lattice structure to increase natural light and airflow without damaging the wines.

“We focused on creating a space that is respectful for wines and workers, to be energy efficient, and to have the possibility of aging in containers that maximize the expression of our native grape Varietals.” – Albert Costa
