Rosé from Provence

As the oldest wine-growing region in France and the world’s largest Rosé-producing area, Provence is the gold standard for Rosé. While Provence is home to eight appellations, the three most influential are: Côtes de Provence, Aix-en-Provence, and Bandol. Côtes de Provence is known for producing fresh, elegant Rosés with bright citrus. Aix-en-Provence, with its higher-elevation vineyards, benefits from a longer growing season that promotes gentle ripening and vibrant natural acidity. Bandol, the smallest and most prestigious appellation in Provence, is renowned for producing fuller-bodied, more structured Rosés with added depth and complexity.

In 1992, Philippe Bieler founded Chateau Routas in Coteaux Varois – a small appellation in the middle of Provence. The winery focused on Grenache based red blends and rosé. His son, Charles got involved in the mid 90’s when they developed, through unorthodox winemaking and creative marketing and selling, one of the more dynamic rosé brands in America at the time. In 2005 there was a great opportunity to sell the winery and estate and they took it. They founded Bieler Père et Fils that same year they sold Routas and focused 100% on making rosé.

Charles Bieler, based in New York City, is known for being one of the top wine innovators in the industry and began championing rosé in the US market back when it was woefully unpopular. As one of Food & Wine magazine’s “Top 40 Big Thinkers under 40,” Charles continues to be a strong force in the beverage world through his partnerships with Trinchero (Charles & Charles and Bieler Père et Fils) and Gotham Project (the category leader in the wine on tap sector).
